    Memories by Edna Marie Blalock

Vance Sr. was an accomplished musician and wanted at least one of his children to learn to play the violin. Every child had a turn with a lesson in the barn. When it was Marie's turn, she was out in the barn with her dad and there were lots of baby chicks running around. Vance put one on top of her head and it pooped on her nose. Vance started laughing and Marie started crying and that was the end of her lesson. Unfortunately, none of the children really learned how to play.

Marie was so proud of her dad when he went to the Singing School in Sabinal, but he was so shy that he would never perform in front of anyone. He would go in the bedroom and shut the door to practice.
